Pulling Dentist from your head pdf1. Field of the Invention
The present invention relates to cable television systems. More particularly, the present invention relates to a system and method for protecting a cable television provider's equipment and computer systems from a remote source that floods a cable television provider's data network with false messages.
2. Description of the Related Art
Broadband television service provider operators, such as cable TV systems, have been widely deployed throughout the world, most notably in the United States. The cable networks used in broadband television service providers operate on a two-way communication model in which subscribers in a cable TV system are connected to service provider equipment, such as set-top terminals, via coaxial cable. These coaxial cables are frequently routed through underground conduits and buildings. The subscriber's set-top terminal is connected to the cable plant equipment by an optical fiber, which is routed to the service provider equipment.
The service provider equipment transmits television signals from the service provider equipment to the subscribers via coaxial cable. When the subscriber wants to view a particular television program, the subscriber sends a request signal to the service provider equipment. The request signal initiates the delivery of the particular television program to the subscriber. The set-top terminal receives the television signal from the service provider equipment via the coaxial cable. The set-top terminal amplifies and conditions the television signal for viewing on the subscriber's television. In addition, the set-top terminal separates the television signal from other services, such as telephony, which are provided on the same coaxial cable.
In order to effectively distribute video programming and other services, broadband television service provider operators use a dedicated infrastructure to route the video programming from the service provider equipment to the subscriber's set-top terminal. The infrastructure includes a data network which is used to distribute the television programming to the subscriber's set-top terminal. The data network is 0b46394aab
