Shivaji was born in 1630 in the hill fort of Shivneri, near Pune. He was the son of Shahaji, a noble and general in the service of the Adilshahi Sultanate of Bijapur. Shivaji inherited his father's jagir (land grant) and title of Chatrapati (chief of the Kshatriyas).

Shivaji grew up as a brave and adventurous boy, who learned the art of warfare and statecraft from his mother Jijabai and his tutor Dadoji Konddeo. He also developed a strong sense of patriotism and devotion to Hinduism, which inspired him to challenge the Mughal Empire and other Muslim states that dominated India at that time.

Shivaji began his military career at the age of 16, when he captured the fort of Torna from the Bijapur Sultanate. He then expanded his domain by conquering more forts and territories in the Deccan Plateau. He also established a loyal and efficient army and navy, which he used to raid and plunder the enemy's resources and trade routes.

Shivaji's most famous exploit was the daring attack on the Mughal governor Shaista Khan in Pune in 1663, which resulted in the loss of Khan's fingers and his humiliation. Shivaji also fought a fierce battle against the Mughal emperor Aurangzeb's general Raja Jai Singh at Purandar in 1665, where he agreed to surrender some of his forts and pay tribute to the Mughals in exchange for peace and recognition.

Shivaji's greatest victory was the coronation ceremony at Raigad in 1674, where he was formally crowned as the king of the Marathas and took the title of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. He also received the blessings of his spiritual guru Samarth Ramdas and the support of many Hindu saints and leaders.

Shivaji's reign was marked by his progressive and benevolent administration, which included a well-organized revenue system, a fair and impartial justice system, a patronage of art and culture, a promotion of education and social welfare, and a respect for all religions and sects.

Shivaji died in 1680 at the age of 50, leaving behind a vast and powerful empire that stretched from the Arabian Sea to the Bay of Bengal. He was succeeded by his son Sambhaji, who continued his father's legacy and resisted the Mughal invasion. Shivaji's descendants ruled over the Maratha Empire until 1818, when they were defeated by the British East India Company. 04f6b60f66
