How to Record in 4K with OBS Studio
For a 4K screen recording when using OBS Studio, your monitor screen must have a resolution of 3840 x 2160 pixels or higher. If your monitor does not support 4K resolution, you will not be able to record in 4K with OBS Studio. You can check your monitor resolution by right-clicking on your desktop and selecting Display settings.
Once you have confirmed that your monitor supports 4K resolution, you can follow these steps to record in 4K with OBS Studio:
Open OBS Studio and go to Settings.
Under the Video tab, set the Base (Canvas) Resolution to 3840 x 2160. This is the resolution of your monitor screen.
Set the Output (Scaled) Resolution to 3840 x 2160 as well. This is the resolution of your recorded video.
Set the Downscale Filter to Lanczos (Sharpened scaling, 36 samples). This is the filter that OBS Studio uses to resize your video if needed.
Set the Common FPS Values to either 30 or 60, depending on your preference and hardware capabilities. Higher FPS values result in smoother videos, but also require more processing power and storage space.
Click Apply and OK to save your settings.
Under the Output tab, select Advanced as the Output Mode.
Select Recording as the Output type.
Select NVENC H.264 (new) as the Encoder if you have a NVIDIA graphics card that supports it. Otherwise, select x264 as the Encoder. NVENC H.264 is a hardware encoder that uses your GPU to encode your video faster and more efficiently than x264, which is a software encoder that uses your CPU.
Select VBR as the Rate Control mode. VBR stands for Variable Bitrate, which means that OBS Studio will adjust the bitrate of your video according to the complexity of each scene. This helps to maintain a consistent quality throughout your video while saving storage space.
Set the Max Bitrate (kb/s) to between 40000 and 60000 for 30 FPS videos, or between 60000 and 80000 for 60 FPS videos. Bitrate is the amount of data that is transferred per second when encoding your video. Higher bitrates result in higher quality videos, but also require more bandwidth and storage space.
Set the Keyframe Interval (seconds) to either 2 or 0 (auto). Keyframes are frames that contain all the information needed to display a scene. A lower keyframe interval means that OBS Studio will insert more keyframes into your video, which improves the quality and compatibility of your video, but also increases the file size.
