Although never mentioned in the movie, the real life experiment was funded by the U.S. Office of Naval Research and was of interest to both the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps as an investigation into the causes of conflict between military guards and prisoners.
During the real experiment the prisoners were \"arrested\" at their homes and \"charged\" with armed robbery. The local Palo Alto police department assisted Zimbardo with the arrests and conducted full booking procedures on the prisoners, which included fingerprinting and taking mug shots. The prisoners were then transported to the mock prison from the police station, where they were strip searched and given their new identities.
A film project about the Stanford prison experiment was first announced in 2002, when producer Brent Emery assigned Tim Talbott to write the script for the film. Problems beset and delayed the project for twelve years, including financing and the 2007 writers' strike.
Nearly all the dialog between the \"guards\" and \"prisoners\" during the experiment was verbatim from actual footage from the real-life experiment. One exception being that the conversation portrayed at the end of the movie was actually between the \"guard\" nicknamed John Wayne and prisoner 416, not 8612.
In the film's final scene, when Dr Zimbardo tells the students that the experiment is over, none of them react and look at him like he's crazy. It's only when he tells them that the prison is closed and they are all free to go home that they finally express emotion and start speaking normally. This is because at this point, they were so absorbed by the experiment that it no longer was an experiment to any of them but instead their new reality. Zimbardo himself also concluded that the experiment had derailed because everyone, himself included, had internalized their roles.
As the mad lab conductor and prison warden, Crudup steers his disaster vessel onward as victims jump ship port and starboard. With the thesis being answered early on, the only reason for running the experiment seems to be if there will be any serious casualties, and what side will they come from. Even in the seemingly innocuous land of make believe, there can be life and death tension, and it is captured brilliantly here on film. 781b155fdc
